Fashion Fridays: Pretty Freedom
Everyone uses the internet for everything these days. Your mom probably has a blog (and if she doesn’t, we’re willing to bet your grandma has Facebook). But when you stumble upon something like Pretty Freedom, that’s when you unlock the magic of not only how magical the internet is, but how important it is in cultural and business development.
Pretty Freedom is a Toronto clothing store located in Kensington Market. Their tagline is “we believe in second chances, ugly dancing & treating every day like a treasure hunt”, so you can deduce that they are into all things vintage and unique. It is run by an adorable coupling who are sure to become the darlings of the Toronto fashion scene.
What makes Pretty Freedom so cool is that they’ve taken their love of all things vintage, which is usually fairly quaint and low-budget, and created the groundwork for a multi-faceted cultural company. It’s not just about the clothes and the products; they are marketing themselves, a defined (and amazing, we might add) sense of style, and in turn a really well-branded company.
We love their logo, we love their videos, and we love their blog. And don’t forget about their incredible talent for spotting trends and seeing the humour in fashion. Who says that Bill Cosby sweaters aren’t cool?
Every week, Pretty Freedom posts “The Weekly Top 40″, a rundown of all the cool stuff they’ve found. They also post really well-done videos like the one above that highlights cool stuff you’re going to want – and the soundtrack is always killer.
We think you should go out and support a local business in its baby stage. Then, when they get big, you can say you knew them when!
Bestfan Exclusive: On the Set of “Night is Young” with Nelly Furtado
Day two on the set of Nelly Furtado’s “Night is Young” video was shot primarily during the night outdoors in the Downtown Toronto area. The weather was rain-free, only a bit chilly but with all the extras dancing and biking around the streets, everybody warmed up. Fans and friends came to support Nelly and to be a part of the video during the 2-day shoot. Nelly even took the time to meet and greet with some of her Bestfan’s between scenes.

Bestfan Exclusive: Canadian Walk of Fame 2010
This past weekend the Canadian Walk of Fame hosted a celebration of Canada’s 2010 inductees. During the official red carpet and ceremony, Canadian stars like actress and filmmaker Sarah Polley, actor Eric McCormack, Winter and Summer Olympic medalist Clara Hughes, Blood, Sweat & Tear’s frontman David Clayton-Thomas, author and activist Farley Mowat, the late Doug Henning – magician extraordinaire, and Bestfan’s very own artist Nelly Furtado. The red carpet was hosted by ET Canada’s Rick Campanelli, while the televised ceremony was hosted by the always charming and hilarious Howie Mandell, who was an inductee to the Canadian Walk of Fame in 2009.
The evening was full of great musical tributes by Alex Cuba who sang a stunning rendition of Nelly Furtado’s ‘I’m Like A Bird’ as well as a special performance by the legendary Burton Cummings (The Guess Who) for Eric McCormack. The incredible Jully Black and Hawksley Workman also paid tribute to David Clayton-Thomas. Canadian songstress Nikki Yanofsky was named the first recipient of the Allan Slaight Award, as Canada’s rising star, and she performed a delightful jazzy tune to close out the awards ceremony.
We would like a send out a special congratulations to Bestfan’s very own Nelly Furtado, who looked radiant at the event and brought the house to happy tears when she accepted her award. Her speech was truly heartfelt and had some quirky moments which we loved, especially her unique giggle.
Nelly has been a part of the music industry, on a global scale, for a decade now and has sold over 25 million records world wide. This is a much deserved honour for all Nelly has contributed to Canada, to music and to the many charities which she tirelessly strives to aid in any way she can.
During this weekend long event, Dane Hartsell, as performed in Dundas Square following the awards ceremony to a huge audience of music lovers. The show was very rock and roll and high energy and the fans we’re completely enjoying Dane’s show. Dane had the whole downtown focused on his thrilling performance of his first single ‘Nothing’.
Enjoy some photo’s from throughout the evening. For red carpet and additional photos, follow Bestfan on Twitter @Bestfan where you can view all the behind the scenes footage from the evening of the ceremony.
Bestfan Exclusive: Greta Constantine Spring/Summer 2011 Collection
On Friday Bestfan got to experience their first Greta Constantine show along side Fashionista and 21 Music/Island Def Jam recording artist Fefe Dobson, who was dressed by the designers themselves! Upon arriving to the venue, the room was filled with Toronto’s top fashionistas patiently and eagerly awaiting for the show to start. Amongst the crowd there was Get Janet (celebrity stylist), Jay Strut (Toronto Fashion Blogger), Keshia Chanté, and Miss. Universe Canada (Elena Semikina). After announcing that the show was about to start, everyone took their seats and so the show began. The models came out one by one, and modeling in the show was Canada’s very own Coco Rocha, looking stunning as always! The collection was filled with beautiful, angelic and flowing pieces. There were Grecian, asymmetrical style dresses and colours ranging from soft taupes to bold reds. The crowd couldn’t take their eyes off the flowing dresses as the models worked the runway. All in all, the evening was a great success. Everyone enjoyed the show, collection and the experience.
