Bestfan would like to introduce you to Marc Cowie! The band that is made up of 4 talented musicians met only months ago and are already on the road playing many different gigs. Marc, Joel, Tyson, and Dave are all native Canadians and have been performing together at many of the Ottawa bars and pubs. On Friday night in Hamilton Ontario, Bestfan was invited to attend one of their shows at The Underground venue. Marc and Joel took the stage and gave the crowd a great acoustic performance, as the full band was not able to attend. The next day Bestfan was able to meet up with Marc and Joel to get to know them a bit better!
(BestFan): Our first important question is how did you all meet, and when did you form the Marc Cowie band? Are you all friends from school, old friends, new friends, and how did you find each other?
(Marc) : For me I started about a year and half a year ago, when I lived in Australia. I lived and worked there for two years and I have been back in Canada for 5 or 6 months. I moved back to New Brunswick and put the finishing touches on my album and then moved to Ottawa and started performing there. We all met in late august. Dave is the bassist, and an old friend of mine. Then Joel and Tyson had jammed together in the past. So when I found Tyson (the drummer), Joel (the lead guitarist) was looking for other people to play with.
(BestFan):Another question that we would love to know is what type of music do you create? I see that you classify yourselves under the indie genre, would you say that all of the singles you have created reflect the indie genre, or are they are mix of genres?
(Marc): When the band first met we tried to figure out what the music scene was like in Ottawa. I really wanted to bring the indie music that I was playing in Australia back to Canada with me, build a repertoire, and play some covers and original songs. Joel: I think that the music we will make together will utilize Marc’s unique voice and give the music a “surfy” and beach rock type of sound. And when we do record we would love to record the tracks as if they were performed for a live audience to make it seem more real.
(BestFan): Who has been influential in your life and when did music become your passion?
(Marc): I found a guitar when I was 15 and just started to play. When I was in Australia I had so many opportunities to play in different bars and just sit and write music. So when I was down there I decided to make music my life.. Its about living your life and this is what I want to do!
(Joel): For me, my whole family is very musically oriented, my grandpa is very talented and plays many instruments. He gave me my first guitar and taught me how to play the basics. I also grew up listening to country music and enjoy Garth Brooks sound.
(BestFan):Out of curiosity what was your first single? And when did you release it? Was is “Slippery When Wet” or was there another first single?
(Marc): Well there isn’t really one song that stands out as the first single. When I was in Australia I would just sit at bars, and down at the beach with my notebook and just write, so when I came back to Canada I just looked to that book. The album is really defined by “Slippery When Wet”, “Wanna Laugh Again”, and “Mr. Confident”. Those are the singles that people enjoy and are the favored ones.
(BestFan): Could you elaborate for us and talk about “Slippery When Wet”? What does the song mean to you? Is there a story behind the lyrics, or is it just a feel good song that you wanted to write?
(Marc): It’s funny because I was actually listening to an unplugged Lauryn Hill album and she does a lot of lyrical rhyming on the album. While I was listening I just started to write, I ended up writing paragraphs and took the title from the main line. I used a lot of flow and lyrical rhyming myself to create the timeline of a story.
(BestFan): You also have a music video for the song “Wanna Laugh Again”, where did you film this awesome video? Also do you think we will see a video for “Slippery When Wet” soon? Or is it already in the works?
(Marc): Actually “Wanna Laugh Again” is not really a video, it was just a surfing video that I took while I was in Queensland Australia. Down the road we would like to make a really cool interesting video that no one has ever done before. We may even look at a cool animation type of video. But we will probably create a video for “Slippery When Wet”, “Mr. Confident”, or “Wanna Laugh Again”.
(BestFan):Looking on your Facebook you were able to record your first album titled “Get Wet” this summer, how did that go? What was it like being in the studio recording your own music? And how cool is it having your first album on iTunes?
(Marc): I recorded the album at Iguana studios this past summer in Toronto, and I chose that one because it was extremely well known and big artists like Nelly Furtado had recorded there as well! I loved the vibe there and the producer Brett Paulin really helped me out a lot with the studio aspect
(Joel): I definitely got a kick out of it when I saw the album on iTunes. “Hey there we are”.
(BestFan): Lastly we want to know what the next step is for the Marc Cowie band? What are your goals and long range plans for the band?
(Marc): Right now we are just going to try and get as many gigs as we can, and perform in Ottawa, Montreal, and Gatineau. Aiming to do, so fast and so new, just trying to hang on for the ride and aim to do as many gigs as they can
(Joel): We love performing and we love doing shows. We want to get as much experience as we can. It is also important to us to get into some band competitions and then when we have time write music together as a full band. This summer we will be looking into the festivals that are well known and build a fan base in the Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto areas.
